Chocolate Fondue Recipe Milk

Why is it necessary to add cream or milk chocolate in a fondue pot?
Ok, so I just got a fondue pot (no source) and all the recipes look like I'm seeing that include the addition of some type of cream or milk chocolate in the pot. I do not understand why. Could Chocolate does not just simply melting is sufficient? What is the reason for the additions?
